Anti-War, Pro-Peace Films
Sir! No Sir! Directed by David Zeiger. Through interviews with GIs from the Vietnam War era, this film brings back to life the forgotten story of the intense opposition to the war from within the military. Through coffee houses, newspapers, desertion, rebellions, fragging, and demonstrations, at bases at home and abroad – including in Vietnam - an intense resistance was mounted, which hastened an end to the war. 2006. 90 minutes.
Hearts and Minds. Directed by Peter Davis. This classic and timeless documentary lets war footage, newsreels, presidential speeches and interviews speak for themselves in a riveting portrayal of the Vietnam War, with telling parallels to the occupation of Iraq. Strongly and emotionally affecting. Released in 1974. 112 minutes.
I Know I’m Not Alone. Directed by Michael Franti. Hiphop/ reggae/ folk artist Franti visits first Baghdad, then Gaza and Israel in search of hiphop and to see for himself what it is like over there. In Baghdad he discovers places we wouldn’t know existed such as a tatoo parlor and a rock radio station and takes us into bombed out homes and hospitals. In Palestine he shows houses being mowed down by Israeli bulldozers (Caterpiller?) speaks with a typical teenage girl in a refugee camp, but he also interviews eyewitnesses to the suicide bombing of a café and people involved in the peace movement. The strongest scenes in both segments are where he brings people from different sides together and gets them talking, laughing, crying, and making music with one another. The film makes clear peoples’ common and deep yearnings for peace and understanding. This is a must-see film to get people to understand both sides of the Israeli Palestinian conflict. The film leaves you hopeful that healing and peace might someday be possible. 2006. 86 minutes.

THE GROUND TRUTH: A RECRUITER'S WORST NIGHTMARE.
They volunteered to serve their country. They came home haunted by what they had done.
Patricia Foulkrod's compelling documentary, THE GROUND TRUTH stunned filmgoers at the 2006 Sundance Film Festival. The unique "out of the box" release included a critically acclaimed theatrical run in September 2006 followed by 1000's of community screenings in churches, universities, libraries, coffee houses and living rooms across the nation.
Hailed as "powerful" and "quietly unflinching," Foulkrod's searing documentary includes exclusive footage that will stir audiences. The terrible conflict in Iraq, depicted with ferocious honesty, is a prelude for the even more challenging battles fought by the soldiers returning home - with personal demons, an uncomprehending public, and an indifferent government.

Soldiers Speak Out is a powerful, first-hand testament to the reality of the military experience, told entirely in the words of American veterans who have been to war and are now opposing it. This half-hour documentary serves as a counter-recruitment and organizing tool for activists, schools, and organizations. It provides a sober view of the war in Iraq and an important counterpoint to the "stay-the-course" rhetoric of the Bush administration.
The DVD is packed with loads of bonus footage, in addition to the documentary: 92 minutes of extended interviews with the veterans, 31 minutes of award-winning shorts: Beyond Babylon, Camp Casey, Leave My Child Alone, Looking Down, plus 27 minutes of trailers from goodfilms.org, music section, and resource section with direct weblinks to important groups and information

"Sir! No Sir!" combines exceptional artistry and insightful analysis with great story telling. This is no facile agitprop piece, but a careful dissection of a growing military rebellion that permanently altered American society, but has largely been forgotten. ~ International Documentary Magazine
